ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Premix and postmix

When you go to a restaurant or a fast food place, you might see big machines with drinks like soda or lemonade inside. These machines work in two different ways, premix and postmix.

Premix means that the drink is already mixed before it gets put into the machine. Imagine making a pitcher of Kool-Aid or lemonade at home. You add the powder or concentrate to the water and mix it up. That's what happens with premix drinks. The restaurant or fast food place gets the drink already mixed from a supplier and puts it into the machine.

Postmix is different. Instead of getting a premixed drink, the machine has different containers with the different ingredients like syrup and carbonated water separated. When you order a drink like Coca-Cola, the machine mixes them together on the spot, just like you do at home when you mix your soda with the different ingredients.

So, to sum it up: premix is when a drink is already mixed before it goes into the machine, and postmix is when the machine mixes the drink together when you order it.
