Preventive detention

Preventive detention is like putting someone in a time-out to keep them from doing something bad.

Just like how parents may keep their child in time-out to prevent them from misbehaving again, governments may use preventive detention to keep people who they believe might do something bad in the future in custody so they won't be able to do it.

There are rules and laws that decide when does preventive detention is necessary, and it is usually only used in very specific circumstances. For example, if a person is suspected of planning to cause harm to other people, the government may put them in preventive detention so that they can stop the harm before it happens.

Preventive detention can be controversial because, in some cases, it means taking away someone's freedom without a trial, but in some circumstances, it may also protect others from potential harm.
