Priest–penitent privilege

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of a priest? They are people who work at churches and they help people with their problems. They are like a friend who helps you talk things out.

Now, when someone goes to a priest to talk about something, they often share really personal stuff. They might talk about things they are ashamed of or things they did wrong. But, it's important for the priest to keep all of that private.

So, the law has something called a "priest-penitent privilege". This means that anything someone tells a priest must be kept a secret between the person and the priest. This is to help people feel safe and comfortable talking with their priest.

It's like when you tell your mom or dad a secret, you trust that they won't tell anyone else. It's the same with a priest. People trust them to keep their secrets safe, and this helps them feel better and less stressed.
