ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Primary election

A primary election is like a big game of tag. Imagine you and all your friends want to be the leader of the playground, but there can only be one. So, you decide to play a game of tag to figure out who should be the leader.

The primary election works the same way, but instead of playing tag, people vote to decide who should be the leader of a group, like a political party. The people who are running for leader (the candidates) try to convince the voters that they should be picked for the job by talking about what they want to do and why they think they would be good at it.

Once all the votes are in, the person who gets the most votes becomes the leader of the group and goes on to compete in a bigger election against the other party's leader.

In summary, a primary election is like a game of tag where people vote to decide who should be the leader of a group, like a political party. The winner goes on to compete in a bigger election.
