ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Primary healthcare

Primary healthcare is the first place you go when you're feeling sick or when you want to make sure you're healthy. It's like your first line of defense for your body.

In primary healthcare, you'll meet a special doctor called a "primary care physician," or "PCP" for short. This doctor is like your main doctor who knows all about your health history and can help you with basic health needs.

If you have a cough, runny nose, or tummy ache, your PCP can help you feel better. They can also check you up to make sure you're growing well and that your body is healthy. They can give you vaccines or shots to help protect you from getting sick.

Sometimes, your PCP might need to send you to a special doctor called a specialist if they cannot help with your problem alone. But most of the time, they are your go-to person for your health needs.

It's important to visit your PCP regularly, even if you feel good, so that they can make sure you stay healthy and catch any problems early on. So take care of your body and go visit your PCP!
