ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Private jurisdiction

Private jurisdiction is when a person or a company can be sued or taken to court in a specific place. Just like how you have a playground at school where you can play, companies or people have certain "playgrounds" where they can be sued if they do something wrong.

For example, if a company is based in New York and they sell their products all over the country, they can still be sued in New York because that's where their "playground" is. This is called "personal jurisdiction" because it's about a person or company being sued in a specific place.

Private jurisdiction can also be about the type of case. Just like how you have different games you can play on the playground, there are different types of cases that can be heard in different "playgrounds". For example, a divorce case might be heard in a different "playground" than a case about a car accident.

Overall, private jurisdiction is about making sure that the right people and cases are heard in the right places. It's like playing on the right playground with the right games.
