ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Probabilistic combinatorics

Okay kiddo, let me explain what probabilistic combinatorics is all about.

When we talk about combinatorics, we are talking about counting things like how many different ways we can arrange a set of objects, or how many different combinations of those objects we can choose.

But when we add probability to the mix, it means we are also interested in how likely it is that certain things will happen when we randomly pick or arrange those objects.

For example, imagine we have a bag of colored marbles. We can use combinatorics to count how many ways we can pick two marbles out of the bag. But probabilistic combinatorics would also ask questions like, "What is the probability that both marbles will be blue? Or what is the probability that we get one blue and one red?"

In other words, we want to use both counting and probability to help us understand the chances of different outcomes happening when we deal with sets of objects.

Hope that helps, kiddo!
