ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Programmed cell death 1

Programmed cell death 1, also known as PD-1, is a very important molecule that helps our body fight off diseases like cancer and infections. Imagine that our body is like a castle, and our cells are the guards that protect the castle. Sometimes, our cells can become infected with bad bacteria or viruses, or they can become damaged and start to grow out of control like weeds in a garden.

That's when PD-1 comes in to help. It's like a knight in shining armor that helps the guards identify which cells are good and which cells are bad. When a guard encounters a bad cell, it sends out a signal to PD-1. PD-1 then sends a message back to the guard, telling it to destroy the bad cell.

This is important because if our guards don't know which cells are bad, they might accidentally attack good cells, which can make us sick or cause other problems. PD-1 helps our body recognize which cells are good and which cells are bad, so that our guards can focus on destroying the bad cells and keeping us healthy.
