ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Progressive supranuclear palsy

Okay kiddo, do you know what your brain does? It helps you think and control your body, like moving your arms and legs. But sometimes, something goes wrong with the brain and it can make it hard for people to think or move like they want to.

One of these things is called progressive supranuclear palsy or PSP for short. It's like a sickness that affects the brain and makes it hard for people to move their eyes and other parts of their body.

It's kind of like when you play a game of follow the leader, but the leader doesn't move the right way. So everyone else has to follow the wrong moves too.

PSP mostly affects older people, like your grandparents or great-grandparents. They might start having trouble with their balance and walking, and they might fall a lot. They might also have trouble talking, which makes it hard to have conversations with them.

But there are some things we can do to help them. Doctors can give them medicine and therapy to make things a little easier. And we can all be patient and kind to them because they're having a hard time.
