ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Project Mercury

Project Mercury was a very important space mission that happened a long time ago (in the 1960s). It was when some very brave people called astronauts rode in a little capsule and went up into space for the very first time.

You know how when you go up in an elevator or in an airplane, your ears start popping? Well, imagine going up even higher than that, all the way into space where there is no air and it's very, very cold. The astronauts had to wear special suits to keep them safe and warm.

The capsule that the astronauts traveled in was very small, kind of like a really small car, and it was launched into space using a big rocket. Once they got into space, they had to spin around the Earth many times to make sure they were safe and could come back down to Earth safely.

The project had many missions, and each time they sent astronauts up, they were able to learn more and more about space and what it's like to travel in it. They even sent a man named Alan Shepard up to be the very first American astronaut in space!

Even though Project Mercury happened a very long time ago, it was a very important step in learning about space and our place in the universe.
