ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pronunciation of English th

Okay kiddo, let's talk about how we make the "th" sound in English words. First, let's try to say it out loud together. Can you put your tongue between your front teeth and push air out? That's it! You just made the "th" sound.

Now, some people might have trouble with this sound because it's not a sound that exists in all languages. But don't worry, with some practice you'll get it right. When you see a word with "th" in it, try to remember to stick your tongue out a little bit and blow some air past your teeth.

There are two types of "th" sounds in English: "voiced" and "voiceless." The "voiced" "th" sound is like in the word "this" and the "voiceless" "th" sound is like in the word "think." The only difference is that for the voiced "th" sound, you add your voice by vibrating your vocal cords while passing air through, whereas for the voiceless "th" sound, you don't use your vocal cords, just air.

It may take some practice, but keep trying and soon you'll be able to say words like "think" and "this" perfectly. Great job!
