ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

rhizome

Rhizomes are like underground stems that grow from the roots of plants. They look a bit like roots, but they don't go very deep into the ground. Instead, they spread horizontally under the surface. Rhizomes can help a plant spread out and cover a bigger area, which is helpful for plants that want to take over a lot of space like grasses and other groundcovers.
