ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Proof by contrapositive

Okay kiddo, let me explain the idea of proof by contrapositive like you're five years old.

When we want to prove something, we often use a method called proof by contrapositive.

The contrapositive of a statement is like looking at the opposite of what you're trying to prove.

Let's say you want to prove that if you eat vegetables every day, you'll be healthy.

The contrapositive of that statement would be: if you're not healthy, then you're not eating vegetables every day.

So instead of showing that eating vegetables will always make you healthy, we can prove that if you're not healthy, it's because you're not eating vegetables every day.

This might seem strange, but it's actually helpful because sometimes it's easier to prove the contrapositive statement.

To use this method, you assume the opposite of what you want to prove. Then, you use logical reasoning and evidence to show that if that assumption is true, it means your original statement must also be true.

So, if you can prove the contrapositive statement, it means that the original statement must also be true.

And that, my young friend, is the idea of proof by contrapositive.
