ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Proprietary chapel

Okay kiddo, have you ever shared a toy with your friend and then they started playing with it all the time without asking? Well, that's kind of like what a proprietary chapel is, except it has to do with sharing a church instead of a toy.

You see, a proprietary chapel is a church that is owned by a person or group of people instead of belonging to a bigger church organization. Kind of like if you had a toy that only belonged to you and no one else.

These owners could be a wealthy family, a company, or even just a group of neighbors who decided to build a church on their own. They're allowed to do this because in some places, people have the right to practice their own religion and build their own church if they want to.

The owners of the proprietary chapel get to decide who can use it for religious services and who can't. Just like how you get to decide who gets to play with your toy or not.

That's the basic idea of a proprietary chapel. It's a church that is privately owned and used by a specific group of people for their religious services.
