ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Propulsion

Propulsion means making something move forward. You know how when you push a toy car, it goes forward? That's propulsion. But when we talk about it in a more grown-up way, we mean making things move forward in a big way, like ships or airplanes or even rockets that go up to space.

To make these big things move forward, we need some kind of engine. Just like a toy car has a little engine that helps it move, big things have big engines that help them move forward. These engines use different things to make them go. Some engines use gasoline, some use electricity, and some even use air to move.

When we turn on the engine, it starts to make things move. Sometimes the engine turns a big propeller that moves the ship, and sometimes it makes big fans that push air behind the airplane to make it go forward.

No matter what kind of engine they use, the goal is the same: to make things move forward. So now you know what propulsion means - it's making big things move forward with engines!
