ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Proxy (statistics)

A proxy in statistics is like a stand-in - it's a measurement that stands in for something else. For example, if you want to measure how popular a certain event is, you might use people's attendance at the event as a proxy for its popularity. In this case, the proxy (attendance) is an indicator for something you can't measure directly (popularity).
