Psammosere

A psammosere is a big word used to describe the different plants and animals that live in sandy areas, like sand dunes.

When sand dunes start to form, there's not a lot of plants or animals there yet. The sand is really loose and it's hard to grow anything in it. But over time, tiny plants like algae and lichens start to grow on the sand. These small plants help to hold the sand in place and create a better environment for bigger plants to grow.

As more and more plants grow, they start to create a habitat for animals too. Small insects and bugs start to live in the sand, and birds and other animals come to the area to eat them.

Over time, different plants and animals start to live in the sand dunes depending on how old they are and how high up they are. The plants at the bottom of a sand dune might be different from the plants at the top. This is what scientists call a psammosere. It's like a big community of plants and animals that live in sandy areas, each with their own special role to play.
