ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Punitive damages

Punitive damages are money that a court may give someone if someone else did something wrong. Punitive damages are like a special punishment to the person who did wrong, and the money is meant to help the person who was wronged. For example, if someone got injured in an accident because someone else was driving carelessly or recklessly, a court may give the injured person money in addition to the medical bills and other costs. This extra money is a punishment for the person who caused the accident in the first place.
