Puttee is like a long sock that goes over your leg and ankle. It was used by soldiers a long time ago to protect their legs and keep their pants from getting dirty. They were usually made of wool or cotton and wrapped tightly around the leg like a bandage. The soldier would start at the ankle and wrap it all the way up to just below the knee. It would help to keep the soldier warm and protect his legs from scratches and scrapes. Sometimes soldiers would even use puttees to tie their boots on more securely!
