ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Quantitative linguistics

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of language? It's the way people talk and communicate with each other. Quantitative linguistics is when people study and measure language using numbers and statistics.

Let's say you and I are talking and we want to see how often we use the word "cat". A quantitative linguist would count every time we say "cat" and then use those numbers to tell us how much we use that word in comparison to other words.

They can also use math to look at the structure and patterns of language. For instance, they might want to know how often certain letters or sounds show up in words. Or they might want to see if there are patterns in the way sentences are put together.

So basically, quantitative linguistics helps people understand language in a really detailed and mathematical way. It's like using numbers and charts to study the way we talk and write.
