Race and inequality in the United States

Okay, little one! So, race is a word that people use to talk about the color of someone's skin or their ancestors. In the United States, people with dark skin have been treated unfairly for a very long time. This is called inequality.

A long time ago, people with light skin (called white people) came to America from other countries and took over the land. They brought dark-skinned people (called Black people) from Africa to be slaves and work for them.

After many years of slavery, there was a time when slavery was illegal, but Black people were still treated unfairly. They were made to go to different schools, sit at the back of buses, and eat at different places than white people. This was called segregation.

Even though the laws have changed and things are better now, Black people (and other people of color) are still sometimes treated unfairly. They might not get good jobs, good housing, or good healthcare just because of the color of their skin. This is called racism.

It's important for everyone to be kind and fair to everyone else, no matter what color their skin is. We should all treat others the way we want to be treated, with kindness and respect.
