ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Rafe

Rafe is a special place in our body that helps us feel things that we touch. Our bodies have lots of tiny nerves that send little messages to our brain telling us when we feel something. These nerves start at our skin and connect to our rafe.
When we feel something on our skin, the nerves send the message to our rafe, which is kind of like a gatekeeper. The rafe decides whether the message is important or not, and either sends it on to our brain or ignores it. If it's something that might hurt, like something really hot or sharp, the rafe sends the message to our brain so we know to move away.
So the rafe helps us feel things and also keeps us safe by deciding which messages are important to send to our brain.
