ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mappiq

Okay, so you know how sometimes when we learn a new word, the spelling of the word changes depending on what comes after it? For example, we write "big" but we write "bigger" when we want to talk about something that is more big. This is kind of like what happens with the letter ק (pronounced "kaf") in Hebrew when it comes at the end of a word.

In Hebrew, there is a special little dot that we can add to the letter ק when it comes at the end of a word. This dot is called a mappiq. When we add the mappiq to ק, it makes the sound "k" stronger and clearer, like when we're saying the word "sick." Without the mappiq, ק might sound more like "ch" in some cases.

So, the mappiq is just a little dot that helps us make sure we're making the right sound when we're reading or writing in Hebrew. When we see the mappiq on ק at the end of a word, we know to make that "k" sound really strong and clear.
