ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Randomized experiment

A randomized experiment is like playing a game where we flip a coin to decide what we will do. Sometimes we will do one thing and sometimes we will do another thing, but it will always be a surprise which one we do. We do this to figure out which thing is better or to see if something causes something else.

For example, let's say we want to find out if eating vegetables makes us feel better. We can divide a group of people into two teams, and one team will eat vegetables every day while the other team will not. We would use a coin flip to decide which team each person is on so it is fair. Then, we would see if the group that ate vegetables really feels better than those who did not.

Randomized experiments help us make sure that both teams are as similar as possible before we start, so we can be sure that any differences we see between them are because of the thing we are testing and not because of other differences. It's like making sure that both teams start on the same side of the field when we play a game, so we can be sure that any scores are really due to how good teams are..
