ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Rangekeeper

Imagine you are playing a game of throwing a ball at a target. You want to make sure you throw the ball just right so that it lands on the target every time. But sometimes you throw the ball too hard or not hard enough, and it misses the target.

Now imagine that instead of throwing a ball, you are firing a big gun at a faraway target. You want to make sure each shot hits the target, but it's much harder to get it right because the distance is much greater. This is where a rangekeeper comes in.

A rangekeeper is like a smart computer for a big gun. It helps the gunner aim the gun properly so that it hits the target every time. It does this by using a lot of information about the gun, the bullet, and the target to calculate exactly what direction and how fast the gun should be aimed.

The rangekeeper takes into account things like the temperature, wind speed, and even the speed at which the earth is rotating! It uses this information to make sure that each shot is as accurate as possible.

So, just like how you try to throw the ball at the target in just the right way to hit it every time, the rangekeeper helps the gunner aim the gun just right to hit the target every time.
