ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Reasoning

Reasoning is like playing a game in your mind where you figure out how things work or why they happen. For example, when you ask yourself “why do I need to wear a coat in winter?”, you use reasoning to come up with the answer which is “because it keeps me warm”.

We use reasoning all the time in our everyday life like when we are trying to solve a puzzle, deciding what to wear for a party, or making a plan to go on a vacation. Reasoning helps us to understand the world better and make good decisions.

There are two main types of reasoning: deductive and inductive. Deductive reasoning is like solving a puzzle or following a set of instructions. You start with a general rule or premise and use it to draw a specific conclusion. For example, if you know that all dogs have fur, and you see a poodle, you can logically assume that the poodle has fur too.

Inductive reasoning is like making an educated guess based on available evidence. You start with specific observations and examples and use them to form a general conclusion. For example, if a child sees a few home pets, like dogs, cats, and rabbits, and all of them have fur, they may decide that all pets have fur.

Overall, reasoning helps us make sense of the world around us and make informed decisions based on the evidence at hand.
