ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Red hair

Red hair is a special type of hair color caused by a gene called MC1R. It is the rarest hair color in humans, found in only about 2 percent of the population. Red hair usually ranges from orange-red to a reddish-brown color. People with red hair have a higher concentration of a special pigment called pheomelanin, and less of a pigment called eumelanin compared to people with lighter-colored hair. This gives the hair its red color.
