ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Reference designator

Okay, so you know how sometimes you play with some toys and they have names like "Teddy" or "Dolly"? Well, when grown-ups design things like toys, electronic devices, or machines, they also give each part a special name so they can talk about it easily.

That special name is called a "reference designator". It's like a label that helps people know which part they are talking about. For example, if there is a circuit board with lots of little parts, each part will have its own reference designator like "R1" or "C2". Now, when people talk about the circuit board, they can say things like "R1 is not working" instead of saying "that little brown thing next to the green thingy is not working".

So, reference designators are just special names for parts that help people talk about and work with things more easily. Cool, right?
