ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Reforms of French orthography

Okay kiddo, so you know how when we learn to read and write, we learn how to spell words the right way? Well, in France, they decided that some of the words they use have spelling that is too complicated and hard to remember. So, they decided to make some changes and simplify these spellings.

For example, before the reforms, they used to spell the word "oignon" (which means onion) with a "g" in the middle, like this: "ognon". But now they spell it without the "g" to make it easier to remember.

Now, not everybody likes the new spellings, and some people think that changing the way words are spelled can make it harder for people to understand each other. But the people who made the reforms think that it's worth it to make things simpler and easier for everyone to use.
