ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Religio licita

Hey kiddo, have you ever heard of something called "religio licita"? No? Well, let me explain it to you in a way you can easily understand!

You know how we have different religions and beliefs in the world, right? Just like how some people believe in God, some in Allah, and some in no God at all. Well, a long time ago, there were some powerful people called the Romans who had their own religion, and they thought it was the only right religion. So they didn't allow anyone else to practice their own religion, and sometimes people who did were punished or even killed.

But then something changed. The Romans lost a big battle and some people from another place called Judea became powerful. These people had a different religion from the Romans, and they were allowed to practice it because their religion was "religio licita." That means the Roman rulers said it was okay for people of this religion to practice it, even though it wasn't the same as the Roman religion.

So "religio licita" means a religion that is allowed or accepted by those in power, even if it's different from the most popular one. It's important because it means people can practice their own beliefs and not be punished or harmed for it, even if the rulers don't agree with it.

Does that make sense to you, kiddo?
