ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Religious habit

A religious habit is the clothing that someone who has chosen to dedicate their life to their religion wears. Just like how you might wear special clothes for a special occasion, like a fancy dress or suit for a wedding, someone who is part of a religious community might wear a special outfit every day to show their devotion to their religion.

The religious habit can vary depending on the religion and the specific community within it. For example, a nun in the Catholic Church might wear a long, black dress with a white head covering called a veil. Meanwhile, a monk in the Buddhist tradition might wear a robe that covers their entire body including their head.

Wearing a religious habit is seen as important because it reminds the person wearing it of their religious commitment, and can also help them to feel connected to their community. Some people might also believe that wearing a religious habit can help them to be more focused on their spiritual practice.

While religious habits are not worn by everyone who is part of a religious community, they are an important symbol for those who do wear them.
