ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Remote terminal unit

A remote terminal unit (RTU) is a little computer that can communicate with other computers or devices from far away. Think of RTU as a messenger between a person and their friends who live far away.

An RTU usually lives in a spot where it can collect information from sensors, like thermometers or weather stations. Then, it sends that information to a bigger computer, like having your mom send your friend's mom a letter about how you like playing outside.

The RTU can also get commands to turn things on or off, like a light switch or a motor. This is like telling your friend to turn on their radio when you're listening to music together.

Overall, an RTU makes it possible for computers and devices to talk to each other from far away and helps things run smoothly.
