ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Renewable natural gas

Renewable natural gas (RNG) is like a special kind of gas that we can make from things that come from the earth, like plants and animals. It’s different from regular gas that we use to drive cars because it doesn’t come from underground like oil, but from things on top of the ground, like food waste or manure from farm animals.

To make RNG, we take these natural things (like waste or plants) and put them into a special machine called a digester. The digester is like a big stomach that breaks down the natural things and turns them into a gas. This gas can then be used to make heat or electricity, or it can be turned into fuel for vehicles.

The reason RNG is so cool is that it’s renewable. This means we can keep making it, unlike regular gas that runs out eventually. Plus, it’s good for the environment because it reduces greenhouse gas emissions (which are bad for the planet) and helps us recycle things that would otherwise go to waste.

So, in summary, renewable natural gas is a gas that we can make by using natural things from the earth, like waste, and it’s great because it’s renewable and good for the environment!
