Republic of Cospaia
Let's pretend we are playing a game and you are the leader of a group called Cospaia. You and your friends decide that you don't want to be ruled by a king or queen anymore, but instead you want to make your own rules! So, you declare Cospaia to be a republic where everyone gets a say in how things are done.
Now, Cospaia is a very small area and is surrounded by two powerful places called the Papal States and Tuscany. These places have rulers and armies that are much bigger and stronger than yours. But because you are a republic, you don't want to be ruled by anyone else. So, you decide to stay neutral and not get involved in any of their battles.
However, this causes some problems because both the Papal States and Tuscany want control of Cospaia. So, they make a deal to split Cospaia in half and each rule over a part of it. But, because you are a republic, you don't want anyone else to rule over you! So, you refuse to let them divide your land and you stay independent.
This goes on for almost 400 years until Cospaia is finally absorbed into the Kingdom of Italy in the 19th century. But, during that time, you and your fellow citizens of Cospaia remained true to your republic and never let anyone else take control of your land.
