Research spin-off

Have you ever gone to the store and seen a new toy that looks like one you already have? It might be a "spin-off" of that toy.

Sometimes, when scientists are doing research, they discover things that can be used in a new and different way. This is called a "technology" or a "product." When they find something like that, they might create a whole new company to develop it and sell it.

That new company is called a "spin-off" because it spun off from the original research. It's kind of like a new toy that's based on an old one, but it has new features and sometimes works in a completely different way.
