ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Retained mode

Retained mode is like playing with toys to make a picture. Imagine you have a bunch of toy animals, cars, and trees. To make a picture you would grab the toys you want and stick them onto a board. The toys stay in the same place until you move them.

Retained mode does something similar with pictures, but instead of toys it uses objects called primitives. Primitives are shapes like triangles, squares, and circles that can be put together to make a picture.

When you want to make a picture in retained mode, you give the computer different primitives along with information such as color, size, and position. Once the computer has all of the information, it puts the primitives together and creates a picture.

The cool thing about retained mode is that you can change the picture easily by moving and changing the primitives. It's like playing with the toys on the board- you can move them around to make a different picture.

Overall, retained mode is a way to make pictures with primitive shapes that can be moved around and changed easily.
