Reye's syndrome

Hi there!

Reye's Syndrome is when really bad things happen to your brain and liver at the same time. It usually happens to kids who are sick with a cold or the flu, and are given medicine that has a special kind of acid called aspirin.

Aspirin might make your fever go down and your headache feel better, but it isn't good for kids who are sick with certain kinds of sicknesses.

When you take aspirin and are sick with a certain kind of sickness, your liver can't protect your brain like it usually does. And when you have Reye's Syndrome, your sick liver can't work properly to clean your blood or give you energy. This can cause your brain to swell up, and you might start to have seizures, headaches, and even go into a coma.

But don't worry, Reye's Syndrome is really rare, and doctors know how to help make you feel better if you do have it. That's why it's important to let your parents or a grown-up know if you are feeling sick, so they can give you the right kind of medicine to help you feel better.
