ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Rifling

Rifling is a process that helps bullets fly straight and accurately. Imagine you are playing with a ball and you throw it straight up in the air. It will go up and down in a straight line. But, if you spin the ball while you are throwing it, it will fly in a curved path called an arc. This is because the spinning motion gives the ball a little twist, and that twist keeps it going in the same direction.

Just like that, rifling gives bullets a twist. The inside of a gun barrel is a long, skinny tube that the bullet travels through. The rifling twists this tube, just like how you spin a ball. When a bullet comes out of a gun that has rifling, it will spin in the air. This spinning motion helps the bullet fly in a straight line and hit the target accurately.

That's why rifling is so important for shooting. Without rifling, bullets would fly in a wobbly and unpredictable path!
