ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Risk compensation

Risk compensation is when we do things to make ourselves feel less scared or worried about something that we think has a risk or danger attached to it. For example, if you feel unsafe walking home alone at night, you might put on a bright shirt so that any bad guys can see you better and keep away. That's risk compensation - you're trying to reduce the risk (danger) by taking an action that makes it feel safer to you.
