So imagine you're going on a long road trip with your family. It's important to know what the weather will be like so you can stay safe on the road. That's why there are special machines called "Road Weather Information Systems" or RWIS for short.
These machines stay outside all the time near the roads and they measure the weather conditions like temperature, wind speed, and humidity. They have special sensors that can even tell if there's ice on the road or how much snow has fallen.
All that information is sent to a computer where it can be checked by people who work for transportation departments. If they see that the weather is getting really bad, they can warn us drivers through the radio, TV, or even on a sign above the road. That way, we can slow down or pull over to stay safe.
So thanks to RWIS, we can have a safer and more enjoyable trip, without worrying too much about the weather.
