ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Robert J. Stoller

Robert J. Stoller was a man who studied people's feelings about their own bodies and their genders.

Imagine that you are a boy and you feel comfortable being a boy because that's what people have always told you that you are. But then imagine that someone tells you that you need to wear dresses and act like a girl instead. You might not feel comfortable with that because it's not what you think you are.

Robert J. Stoller wanted to understand why people feel this way about their bodies and their gender. He asked people lots of questions and listened to their answers very carefully. He studied how people talk about themselves and their bodies.

He discovered that some people feel very uncomfortable with the body they were born with. They might feel like they are a boy but their body looks and acts like a girl. This can be confusing and upsetting for them. Stoller called this gender dysphoria.

Stoller also studied how people feel about their own gender identities. Some people might feel like they are a boy, but other people keep telling them that they should be a girl. This can be very hard for them too.

Through his research, Stoller helped people understand that it's okay to feel uncomfortable with your body or gender identity. He showed us that we should be accepting of people and who they feel they are.
