A rock-cut tomb is a special kind of tomb or grave that is made by carving, cutting or excavating a big hole or chamber in a solid rock. It is like making a big cave but instead of living inside it, we put dead people or bodies in it so they can rest in peace.
Imagine that you have a big rock, and you want to make a place where you can bury someone. But instead of digging a hole in the ground, you can carve out a special space in the rock. In olden days, people used to make rock-cut tombs to honor the dead, and usually, these tombs were meant for important or wealthy people like kings, queens, or royalty.
The craftsmen or workers would start making a tomb by selecting a proper rock that would be strong, durable, and free from cracks or damages. Next, they would use special tools like chisels, hammers, and saws to slowly and carefully carve out the rock along the lines of the tomb design. This process could take weeks or even months to finish!
Once the tomb was finished, the body of the person who had passed away was carefully laid inside, along with other precious items like jewelry or offerings. Many times, the tombs were decorated with beautiful paintings, carvings, or sculptures, which added to their beauty and importance.
Nowadays, many rock-cut tombs still exist in different parts of the world, and they are considered valuable historical and cultural heritage sites. Some famous examples are the Egyptian pyramids, Petra's tombs in Jordan, or the Ellora caves in India. They remind us of our past, our traditions, and how we used to honor our loved ones.
