When World War II was happening, some people in a group called the Roma (also known as Gypsies) were treated very poorly by another group that had a lot of power. This was a time when people were being discriminated against and treated unfairly based on different things like their religion, race, or beliefs.
On August 2nd, 1944, very bad things happened to a lot of Roma people in a place called Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. They were taken from their homes and families, and many were killed or hurt. This day is remembered because it was a very sad time for the Roma people, and it reminds us that we should always treat others with kindness, no matter who they are or where they come from.
Now, every year on August 2nd, we have a special day called Roma Holocaust Memorial Day. It's a day where we think and remember the bad things that happened to the Roma people during the war, so that we can learn from what happened and make sure that it never happens again. We also use this day to honor the lives of the Roma people who were lost and to show our support for the Roma community.
