ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Roman gardens

Hey little buddy! Have you heard of Roman gardens? They were these really pretty gardens that people in Ancient Rome used to make. Let me explain it to you like you’re 5.

The Romans loved pretty gardens with flowers and trees, and they created these gardens for many reasons. They would sometimes use them for relaxing or for entertaining guests. Some wealthy Romans would even show off their gardens to others so they could see how rich and fancy they were.

Roman gardens were often divided into different sections. There were usually lots of walkways that people could stroll along, and these pathways were often decorated with pretty plants or statues. One section of the garden might have a pond with fish swimming in it. Another section might have a fountain that sprayed water into the air. There were even areas where people could sit and enjoy the sunshine or have a picnic with their friends.

Most of the plants that were used in Roman gardens were grown for their beauty, but some were grown for their practical uses. For example, Romans loved to use herbs like basil and mint in their cooking, so they would often grow these plants in their gardens.

Roman gardens were also designed to be really easy to take care of. The Romans didn’t have lawn mowers, so they would often cover the ground with gravel or stones instead of grass. They also used water wisely because they knew it was important to conserve resources.

So there you have it, little one! Roman gardens were these amazing little areas filled with pretty flowers and statues that people used for a variety of reasons. They were easy to take care of and often had areas for people to walk or sit down and relax.
