ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Roman navy

Hey kiddo, have you ever heard of ancient Rome? Well, back then they were a pretty powerful empire and they had a navy - which is like a big group of ships that help protect their country and do important jobs on the water.

The Roman navy was really important because a lot of the wars they fought were over controlling the oceans and the ports. They needed to make sure their ships were really strong and fast, so they could get to where they needed to go quickly and safely.

Now, let's learn about some of the different types of ships that the Roman Navy used. The biggest ones were called 'quadriremes' and 'quinqueremes', which just means that they had four or five rows of oars on each side of the ship. That's a lot of people rowing! They also had smaller ships called 'biremes' and 'triremes', which had two or three rows of oars.

Sometimes these ships would have really cool features to help them in battle. For example, some of them had a big pointy stick called a 'rostrum' on the front that could smash into enemy ships and damage them. Others had metal grates on the side that soldiers could stand on so they could shoot arrows or throw things at enemies.

One more thing that's super interesting is that the Roman navy had its own special group of soldiers called the 'marines'. They were trained for fighting on ships and could board enemy vessels to take them over. They were like superheroes of the sea!

Overall, the Roman navy was really important for keeping the empire safe and strong. They had many different types of ships with different features, and they even had their own group of highly skilled soldiers. Cool, huh?
