ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Rootless cosmopolitans

Rootless cosmopolitans, also known as cosmopolites, are people who feel like they belong to many places at once, rather than just one specific location. Imagine you have lots of toys in different rooms of your house, and you like playing with them all equally. Cosmopolites feel the same way about the different cultures, languages and traditions they encounter in different parts of the world, and don't want to limit themselves to just one.

In the past, some people did not like cosmopolites and called them "rootless" because they didn't have a strong connection to one particular place. People used to live in small, local communities with their families, and these communities were important for their sense of identity and belonging. But now we have phones, computers, and planes that allow us to connect with people all over the world - so it's easier to be a cosmopolite, and some people think that's a good thing.

However, some people still think being a cosmopolite is bad or dangerous. They might think that it's important to have a strong sense of national or cultural identity, and that cosmopolites can't be trusted because they don't have the same strong loyalties as other people.

In summary, being a rootless cosmopolitan means that you feel connected to many different places and cultures, rather than just one. Some people think this is a good thing, while others see it as a threat to traditional ideas of identity and loyalty.
