ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Rose (mathematics)

Imagine you have a special tool called a compass. It's like a pencil, but instead of a lead point, it has two arms that can move in a circle. When you move the arms of the compass to form a circle, you can draw a perfect circle every time.

Now, imagine you draw one circle, and then you draw another circle that starts from the same point on the first circle. You keep going, drawing one circle after another, until you have a lot of circles all connected at the same starting point.

If you look at it from above, these circles will form a beautiful pattern that looks like a flower with many petals. This pattern is called a rose, and it's named after the flower because it looks like one.

Mathematicians are interested in this kind of pattern because they can use it to study all sorts of things, like the way sound waves move or how particles in physics interact with each other. They even have fancy ways to describe these patterns using numbers and equations.

So, in short, a rose in mathematics is a pattern that looks like a flower with many petals, made by drawing a bunch of circles with a compass. It's useful for studying all sorts of things in science and math.
