Rouging

Have you ever seen a red or brownish color appear on iron or steel equipment in a swimming pool, pharmaceutical plant, or other industrial facility? That's called rouging.

When iron or steel equipment is exposed to certain environments like high temperatures, moisture or chemicals, it can start to oxidize. Oxidation is like rust, but it's different because it can create a layer of iron oxide that is thin and protective. However, when too much iron oxide forms, it starts to become a problem.

The layer of iron oxide that forms during rouging can flake off and cause contamination in the production process. For example, in a pharmaceutical plant, it could potentially affect the purity of the medicine being made.

That's why rouging is important to monitor and prevent. It can be prevented by using materials that are less prone to oxidation or using stainless steel, which is resistant to rouging. It's also important to regularly inspect equipment for any signs of oxidation and take corrective measures if necessary to prevent potential contamination.
