Russian language in Ukraine

Ukraine used to be a part of the Soviet Union, and when the Soviet Union split up, Ukraine became its own country. The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian, but many people in Ukraine also speak Russian, which was the main language of the Soviet Union. In some parts of Ukraine, especially in the eastern part, Russian is more commonly spoken than Ukrainian, so it's a language that many people in Ukraine understand.
