ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Safety in numbers

Safety in numbers is a concept that means you are safer when you are in a group than when you are alone. It's like when you go to the park with your family or friends. When everyone is together, you feel safer and more secure because there are lots of people around who can help you if you need it.

The same thing happens in the animal world. Some animals live in groups called herds or packs, and they do this because they are safer when they are all together. For example, when a lion is looking for food, it is more likely to attack one animal all alone rather than attacking a whole group of animals because the group looks bigger and stronger so it's not as easy to catch just one animal.

In the real world, crowds of people can also provide safety because it's harder for bad people to commit crimes when there are lots of witnesses around. If you ever get lost, you can ask a police officer or another adult to help you. They will often tell you to go to a busy place like a store or a restaurant, so you can be around other people who can help keep you safe.

So, always remember, being together in a group means you are safer because there are more people to watch out for you, help you, and protect you if you need it.
